From launching an acting career at the age of 60 to becoming a latter-day track and field star, Canadians are redefining what it means to be a senior citizen.

As part of the CBC’s week-long series The New Retirement: Seniors in Canada, CBC News produced a photo essay on six Canadians who have used their retirement years to reinvent themselves:

  • Christa, 76 – Competitive Runner
“Track and Field has given a lot of joy to my life”
  • John, 79 – Actor-Playwright
“Somehow you’ve got to get over your fear of failure. The only thing stopping you is yourself.”
  • Joe, 68, and Edwina, 66 – Adventure Travellers
“Once we retired, we did things we never even contemplated when we were working.”
  • Tita, 68 – Meditation Expert
“We think we know it all, but rally, there is so much more we can still discover about the world and ourselves.”
  • Kehar, 79 – Super-Volunteer
“Every senior person, as far as he or she can, should help in their community.”
  • Katalin, 87 – Painter
“I am a true late bloomer, but in life, everything has a reason.”
