A woman, 82, has died after being struck by a car in an apparent hit-and-run in the southbound lanes of Highway 400 early Thursday.
Police believe the woman, Chandrowtie Basdeo, from Vaughan, wandered into the right lane on foot where she was clipped by a passing vehicle.
According to the Basdeo’s brothers, she was struggling with Alzheimer’s disease and had wondered away from home before. When they noticed she was missing, they began searching.
Apparently she walked seven kilometres between her home and the 400.
Calls came in to police around 4 a.m. about a woman struck on the highway. The OPP believe the vehicle who hit Basdeo is a grey 2010 or 2011 model Ford Escape. It likely has damage to the front end and the passenger side mirror.
Police are asking anyone who may have been in the area at the time to contact them if they witnessed anything.
The highway was closed from King to Teston roads for the investigation. It reopened just before 9 a.m.
