Staying in bed all day has become the norm for my mom since she came home from the hospital two months ago. She seems to be physically recovered, but not motivated to do much. What should I do?
She may be depressed. Depression is common in seniors, particularly after the trauma of an operation or a major life change. It could also be a physical problem. Either way, a trip to the doctor might be in order to check things out. If everything is fine physically then small outings may be a start. If your Mom is in her own home, try getting her to simply sit outside, where she can get fresh air and watch people. Try having something regularly scheduled, such as a call every day at 12 noon or a friendly visitor from the local church or senior centre volunteers so that your mom has something to look forward to every day.
