Using the stove is becoming a problem for my sister. Recently, the home care worker found several blackened pots on the stove. What can I do?

The first thing to do is to make sure the smoke alarm is working in her home. This includes checking to make sure the batteries are new.

Next, talk with your sister to assess her competence. Has she been to see her doctor recently? Has there been a change in her behaviour in any other way? Has she had a recent change in her medications? Is she forgetful due to medication or perhaps due to dementia? If it is dementia, it might be time to assess the need for increased assistance in the home. An accredited agency can help you determine your sister’s needs and can send personal support workers to her house to help you keep your sister safe in her home.
