Sometimes it is hard for people to maintain a healthy diet. Time constraints often prevent people from eating properly, as when someone is pressured for time they will opt for fast food instead of preparing a meal. While a young person may be able to get by with an unbalanced and unhealthy diet, a senior, however, won’t be able to do the same without putting their health at risk.

As a person ages into their senior years, it becomes ever more important that they have a healthy diet, and adequate amounts of vitamins and other nutrients. If a senior is unable to maintain a healthy diet it is important that they supplement their diet by taking vitamins. Even if a senior already maintains a healthy diet they can guarantee their good health by taking vitamins.

Some vitamins that are known to preserve good health in seniors are Vitamins E, D, C, calcium, zinc, and the B vitamin complex. These vitamins are antioxidants, which help maintain health.

From that list of vitamins there are two that are very important to maintain the health of seniors – calcium and vitamin C.

Calcium aids in the development and maintenance of strong and healthy bones. Seniors who are concerned about developing osteoporosis (the thinning of the bones which increases the risk of fracture) should be sure that they are getting more than enough calcium. This can be done by drinking milk products and eating fruits and vegetables.

The other vitamin that seniors need to be sure they are getting enough of is vitamin C. Vitamin C helps enhance the immune system, which can help someone not get sick during the cold and flu season of winter. Since the immune system of seniors is not as strong as that of a young person, it is important that they do all they can to fortify it.

Getting the right amount of vitamins and nutrients is not hard provided that a senior either eats properly or takes multivitamins. Ensuring that a senior’s diet has enough greens, fruits, and milk is not a difficult task provided that proper dietary planning is put in place. If a senior is unable to eat a proper diet, they can bolster their vitamin intake by eating multivitamins. Making sure that one has a proper, healthy diet and supplementing this intake with extra vitamins is one of the many keys to living a long healthy life.
