A move to a new home

Whether your parents are moving to a retirement home, assisted living or long-term care facility, do your research. Read over the literature with your parents, make a few visits to the new home before the move and get to know some of the other residents and staff. Check out the schedule of activities, pick out a few that your seniors might like and see if you can join in with some before moving day.

The death of a loved one

Respect the grieving process. Encourage communication about feelings, make sure your loved one is eating properly and watch for any alarming behaviours. If you were close to the deceased, it is important to give yourself time to grieve as well.

A serious diagnosis

Help your parents find out as much as possible about the condition or disease. Explore treatment options, available specialists and recovery/rehabilitation times. Encourage them to keep diaries and talk about how they are feeling. Help them keep their daily routine and social life as close to normal as possible.
